Program Note
Pièce Symphonique, written after the death of a close cousin, paints a vivid picture of the different stages of mourning. The piece was initially composed for the 1907 Paris Conservatoire Concours; however, Renié felt that the funeral march theme which begins the piece was not appropriate for submission. The introduction of the piece is earth-shattering, undeniable in its agony. The second “episode” is tumultuous by contrast, attempting to deny the deep pain communicated through the funeral march. Through its rapidly changing nature, it handles the conflicting emotions that arise from remembering a lost loved one. Finally, the third episode of the piece combines the themes from the first two sections, molding them into something triumphantly beautiful and new. Renié has inscribed an epitaph at the top of the piece: “The thought of future hope does not diminish sorrow, but it transfigures it.”
